About

The person behind the computer.

How I got here

I’ve loved Apple products for as long as I can remember. I’ve owned every iPhone except the very first one, so it’s probably no surprise I ended up building apps for them.

I didn’t start out in tech, though. I began college studying Intelligence Analysis, and along the way I realized I could pair my communication and presentation skills with programming. I wanted to be an engineer who could also explain, present, and lead, so I switched to Computer Science at James Madison University.

Two summers at NASA Langley sealed it. One of my favorite memories is soldering a temperature sensor onto a fixed-wing drone, then watching it stream live engine temperatures back to us while it flew.

From there I spent three years at Capital One, then went deep on native iOS at Addepar, Fliff, and now Toast.

Why mobile

I love building for the device people carry everywhere.

Native mobile has challenges you don’t find anywhere else: form factors, app performance, battery life, privacy, and releases you can’t just roll back. That’s what makes it fun. And every June and September feel like the holidays, with WWDC, new SDKs, and new products to dig into.

How I work

I’m collaborative and low-ego, and I get more out of seeing teammates succeed than out of my own wins. Great software is a team effort, and I like bringing everyone along for the ride, whether that’s sharing context, presenting an idea, or building tools that make everyone’s day a little easier.

Outside work

I was born and raised in Virginia Beach, and a couple of years into my career I moved back to be close to family. Most of my free time goes to playing with my kids and spending time with my wife.

My job keeps me at a computer, so I make up for it outside: long-distance and endurance running, downhill mountain biking, snowboarding, and just about any sport or activity I can find.
